Major General Ryan Heritage was named commander of the United States Marine Corps (USMC) Cyberspace Command July 7, the unit announced. He will report directly to Gen. Paul Nakasone, who heads up the U.S. Cyber Command.
Heritage is a USMC veteran and takes over the post from Maj. Gen. Matthew Glavy. He will now head the Marine Corps’ Cyber division in charge of leveraging the full spectrum of cyberspace operations, which just celebrated its 11th year of existence.
“I am excited to return to the cyber domain and look forward to being part of this command’s legacy of great people, strategy, and a culture of winning,” Heritage said at the transition ceremony.
Heritage had spent the last three years as the commanding general for USMC’s Western Recruiting Region and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego.
Heritage also got his career started in the Marine Corps, working his way up from program analysis and evaluation branch head in the Programs and Research Department to an 81mm Mortar Platoon Commander in the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines, 26th Marine Exploration Unit.
Heritage also holds a Master of Military Studies from the Marine Corps University and a Master of National Security Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.
