Dr. Rafael Fricks

Rafael Fricks, PhD is the Associate Director for AI in Medical Imaging at the Department of Veterans Affairs MAVERIC Informatics Group and National Artificial Intelligence Institute (NAII). He joined the VA in 2018 through the BD-STEP program as a Data Science postdoctoral fellow. He has led approximately a dozen open technology challenges, including seven on behalf of the VA, as well as served as the RCE for the AI Summit Series 2022-2023.
He received his BS in biomedical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2013, and his MS and PhD in biomedical engineering at Duke University in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
He has served as a reviewer for multiple organizations and published over twenty peer-reviewed abstracts and research papers in topics such as computer vision, artificial intelligence, safety, image quality, operations research, and probabilistic modeling for health care systems.
