The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has tapped Michael Boyce to lead its AI Corps, which the agency established back in February.
The AI Corps is modeled after the U.S. Digital Service (USDS) and aims to bring 50 new AI experts to DHS to help better leverage responsible AI technology.
Boyce previously served at the White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB), where he worked as a senior policy analyst focusing on FedRAMP and AI policy. He helped work on President Biden’s recent AI executive order (EO) and led the AI team created in response to the National AI Talent Surge.
He also served as the chief of innovation and design for the Refugee, Asylum and International Operations Directorate at the U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services, and as a digital service expert at USDS.
“Having worked on AI policy and the recent executive order, my colleagues know that I was often a voice advocating for the criticality of implementation to accompany strong policy,” Boyce said in a LinkedIn post on Thursday. “I’m thrilled that we are taking a ‘digital service’ approach modeled on the U.S. Digital Service and related teams, and I am appreciative of many folks for their vision here.”
“In this new technological era, if you believe as I do that we need to seize the opportunity of AI while ensuring it upholds the values that we believe in as a nation, I can’t think of a more impactful opportunity,” he said of his new role.
