The Department of Veterans Affairs has named Dan Galik to be the agency’s new acting chief information security officer, MeriTalk has learned.
Galik, VA’s former Associate Deputy Assistant Secretary for Security Operations, will replace Stan Lowe, who announced his retirement on Aug. 7.
“Daniel Galik will serve as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary and Chief Information Security Officer,” wrote VA Chief Information Officer LaVerne Council in an email sent to staff late Tuesday and obtained by MeriTalk. “Dan is working with our outgoing CISO, Stan Lowe, to ensure a smooth transition, and Dan’s tenure officially begins on August 31.”
Galik previously served as Chief Security Officer CISO for both the Internal Revenue Service and Department of Health and Human Services.
In his new role at VA, Galik “will be responsible for ensuring that the Office of Information Security focuses on the protection of Veteran information as the top priority for [the Office of Information and Technology],” Council wrote. “This will include enacting strong policies, processes, and procedures that protect the information and systems that affect every Veteran, their families and beneficiaries, and VA employees.”
In May, former VA CIO Stephen Warren had appointed Galik to lead the agency’s Continuous Readiness and Information Security Program, known as CRISP.
