David Gaston has been appointed the National Labor Relations Board’s (NLRB) first chief artificial intelligence officer (CAIO).
Gaston will take on that role in addition to his current position as assistant general counsel and the agency’s branch chief of eLitigation. He is entering the new role with legal training and experience from serving as an attorney at the Department of Justice and the Department of Agriculture.
“David is a nationally recognized expert in information governance, technology policy, and digital evidence,” Lauren McFerran, NLRB chairman, said in an Aug. 29 statement. “We are confident David’s deep experience will tremendously benefit our work, and we look forward to his leadership in this new role.”
Gaston will be responsible for compliance with Federal AI directives including the advancement of AI governance and innovation while mitigating risks, according to the agency’s statement.
“David has ably led the development and execution of information policy and litigation strategy for seven years at this Agency and for nearly 15 years in the federal government. His expertise will allow the NLRB to move forward strategically in the area of AI,” said Jennifer Abruzzo, NLRB’s general counsel, in a statement.
Gaston received a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School and Bachelor of Arts in history and political science from the University of Georgia.
