Gary Cantrell

As the Deputy Inspector General for Investigations, Mr. Cantrell is the senior official responsible for supervising the functions of the Office of Investigations (OI) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General (OIG). He manages, directs, and coordinates the operations and resources of OI, which includes a workforce of nearly 600 employees, comprised of investigators, analysts, forensic examiners, and administrative staff. Under his leadership, the Office of Investigations had record accomplishments in FY 2013 and 2014 to include over 2900 criminal and civil actions and over $9 billion in investigative receivables.

Mr. Cantrell began his career with OI in 1996 as a Special Agent in the Atlanta Regional Office and later served in various leadership positions including Director of the Information Management Staff, Director of the Computuer Forensics and Investigative Research Branch, and Assistant Inspector General for Investigations. His leadership extends beyond OI to the Health Care Fraud Prevention and Enforcement Action Team (HEAT) where he was instrumental in the development and ongoing work of the HEAT Advanced Data Intelligence and Analytics Team for which he and the team received the CIGIE Award for Excellence in Information Technology. The HEAT data analytic efforts supported the development of Medicare Strike Forces in nine “fraud hot spot” cities. To date, Medicare Strike Force efforts have resulted in 1158 criminal actions, 1732 indictments, and more than $1.5 billion in monetary recoveries.

Mr. Cantrell holds Bachelor’s degrees in Criminal Justice from Georgia State University and Computer and Information Science from the University of Maryland, University College.
